Jury service is a fundamental pillar of the justice system. In the District of Columbia, over 400 residents have been called to serve as grand jurors.
The grand jury is a legal body comprised of laypeople that determines whether there is probable cause to believe that a crime has been committed and whether to indict the accused. Grand juries are empaneled for a term of 18 months and hear evidence in secret.
