Georgia's Path to EU Membership: Progress and Challenges
EU-Georgia Relations
Georgia and the European Union (EU) have a close relationship, with Georgia having signed an Association Agreement with the EU in 2014 and a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) in 2016. Georgia applied for EU membership in March 2022.
EU Assessment of Georgia's Progress
The EU has welcomed Georgia's progress towards EU membership, but has also raised concerns about certain legislative proposals that could compromise Georgia's EU path. The EU is currently conducting a mid-term assessment of its Multi-annual Indicative Programme (MIP) for Georgia to evaluate progress and identify areas for improvement.
Recent Developments
In a recent meeting, the EU and Georgia discussed Georgia's EU accession path, political dialogue and reform, and economic cooperation. The EU urged Georgia to continue to implement reforms and address concerns raised by the EU.
